"Om Swastitastu! (a Balinese greeting that means may you be safe and happy)! My name is Made Mudana. I am from a community of artists from Ubud, where East and West meet in peace and harmony. I spend my life carving horses, I just love it very much. When I see a log, an image has already installed itself in my mind. Then, I carve out the parts not needed.

"My father taught me how to carve when I was just ten years old - I had no formal training in art at that time. In Bali, traditions and culture pass on from generation to generation. We learn and play together with peers. The elders teach and guide us patiently.

"Everything goes on naturally with the freedom of art. However, each of us has individual talent that grows in its distinct way. Artwork is very different when made without machinery. I have to follow the grain and shape of the wood, print the figure in, and take it out piece by piece. The form appears gradually until it becomes the desired one. I now work with five artists who are my students and family."

"Every piece crafted at my workshop goes hand in hand with originality, design and quality."

"Hello. My name is J. Blas. From the time I was small I have enjoyed arts and crafts. I loved to dig and prepare clay to make my own pieces and from that time on I began to experiment with ceramics. When I was 17, I started my own ceramic workshop because I hate to ask anyone for work – I feel shy and ashamed. Due to my lack of experience, I had to shut it down and went to work in other studios as well as in a ceramics museum, where I learned everything – from how to look for clay to crafting techniques.

"Over time, I learned more and more and became aware of the critical stages that clay has, and where it is good to depend on other people to work it perfectly. And so I changed directions and began to work in wrought iron and blown glass. When things began to get better, I started to experiment with sheets of iron of different weights to give my works more movement.

"Currently I again have my own workshop where we craft a variety of products, mostly decorative. We cut the metal sheets and hammer them into shape. Then we weld them and add the details. For a clean appearance, we submerge them in an acid bath to remove grease and carbon. After that, they are treated to retard rust before we paint them with a special, lead-free paint.

"We are the first workshop in the area to utilize a fine blowtorch as a work tool and to give more originality to our products. Every piece created at my workshop goes hand in hand with originality, design and quality. We are always developing new designs and products."

The craftsmanship shows real technical skill, a wonderful eye for realistic likeness, and an ability to take something useful and make it unique and artistic. "My name is Surapon Asawasetkowit and I was born on September 16, 1961. Arts and crafts have been in my heart ever since I was a young kid. At school, I always got the best grades in art subjects. I also like inventing things following my own ideas, without any guidance or influence. In addition, I love horses; they are such beautiful and wild animals. I enjoy reproducing their majestic bodies and their stance. Therefore, after graduating with a bachelor degree in social sciences and anthropology, I decided to dedicate myself to carving wood handicrafts. I set up a workshop and my first piece took me about eight months to design and carve. Thereafter, I developed new designs including statuettes, rocking, and swinging horses.

"I have been quite successful, perhaps because I pay particularly attention to quality, and because I am the only person to make this kind of items in Thailand - indeed to prevent unauthorized copying, I have each design copyrighted.

"I also believe that in life, we should do our duties to the best of our abilities. We should have a goal and try to reach it. Although there will be obstacles along the way, we should keep the enthusiasm and confidence to finally reach it one day. I do things I want to do, and I like challenge. Once I set my mind on something, I will put love and all my skills into it, and the outcome is consequently always satisfying, which of course makes me proud.

"Regarding the future, I plan to keep on developing new products while preserving quality and the products' uniqueness. I am proud to present to the world products that demonstrate the exceptional skills of Thai artisans. I try to craft the best products possible. Surapon Asawasetkowit's fine craftsmanship and quality is highly recognized and was awarded the Chiang Mai OTOP Product Champion First Grade (2003), after receiving five stars in the OTOP competition which included district, provincial and regional levels.

OTOP refers to the One Tambon (sub-district) – One Product project, created by the Thai Prime Minister to develop and promote local handicrafts.

"My name is Nyoman Karsa and I was born on December 31, 1967. I learned woodcarving from my father and the senior artists of my village, for example, the famous Wayan Winten. I have worked in my own art studio and shop since 1987.

"I usually carve sculptures from ebony, suar, crocodile, and hibiscus woods. Each of the woods has specific characteristics of color, durability, and aroma. Ebony comes from Sulawesi, while the others grow locally. Mass media and the everyday traditional lifestyle of our environment and community are the sources of my inspiration. Some of my pieces deal with traditional dances, the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata, sports, animals, and abstract figures.

"When creating a sculpture, I first see it in my mind, making an image of how it would look on a log or a piece of wood. I make a draft on the wood piece, chiseling the initial form and detailing the parts, finishing it off by smoothing and polishing.
